Morning in Parma

Piazza Duomo (The Cathedral Square):The Cathedral, a splendid example of Romanesque architecture, enriched by the painted dome; one of Correggio’s most famous masterpieces and the 12th Century Baptistery, a unique jewel of medieval building designed by the great architect Benedetto Antelami.

Palazzo della Pilotta:The Farnese Theatre, a treasure among museums, a huge theatre constructed entirely of wood, beautifully restored to its former glory, originally built in 1618. The Pilotta also houses the National Gallery and Archaeological Museum, the Palatine Library and the Cortile del Guazzatoio (a courtyard and bathing pool for the Duke’s Cavalry horses).

Camera della Badessa (The Abbess’s Private Chamber):For all lovers of beauty this room, painted by Correggio around 1518, is a “must” - not to be missed. The illusion, the tricks of light and shadow, the clear call of the classical and pagan worlds, never fails to enchant the visitor.

This half day of the itinerary is entirely in the heart of the city and we walk along the streets and lanes of the historical centre; through its many squares seeing other monuments such as the Teatro Regio (Maria Luisa’s Royal Theatre), the offices of the City Council (housed in the historical “Corn Exchange”) and the Governor’s Palace in Piazza Garibaldi.

Piazza Duomo

A castle or palace in the local area, we suggest one of the following

On the Padana plain

Fontanellato: a medieval moated castle which houses the “Small Hall” a beautiful room frescoed by Parmigianino - his masterpiece depicting the myth of “Diana and Acteon”.

Colorno: the “Little Versailles” of the Duchy of Parma, the Dukes’ summer palace and court, a beautiful “confection” built in the rococo style.

Soragna: transformed from a fortified castle into a residential palace by the Princes of the Meli Lupi family whose descendants still own and live in it, visit the beautiful rooms furnished in the original style. The itinerary in Soragna continues with a visit to the Synagogue and Jewish Museum and rounded off with a tasting at the Museo del Parmigiano Reggiano  (Museum of Parmesan cheese) “the King of Cheeses”.

In the hills

Torrechiara: a splendid castle built on top of a hill, photogenic and spectacular, it is home to the famous “Camera d'Oro”, the “Golden Room” frescoed in the second half of the fifteenth century

Villa Magnani-Rocca: a private residence and art gallery displaying works spanning the 12th to the 19th centuries by artists such as Durer, Tiziano, Rubens, Goya, Monet, Burri, Morandi etc..

During this guided tour you will be able to visit a producer of the famous Prosciutto di Parma “Parma Ham” and / or a manufacturer of  Parmigiano Reggiano, “Parmesan cheese”.
